Tokmok's rural charme belies its actual size. More than 50.000 people live here, making the city the main urban hub of the Chuy valley. Located about 50 kilometres east of Bishkek, Tokmok boasts one of the most important animal bazaars in Northern Kyrgyzstan. Each Sunday the local farmers and traders flock together on a wide market area in the northern outskirts of town.

"Die Wirthe dieser Jurten sind ein schöner frischer Menschenschlag, und ihr gesundes Ansehen erinnert an die Bewohner des Nordens. Sie betasteten und besahen Alles was wir an uns hatten, von der Mütze bis zu den Stiefeln, insbesondere aber ergötzten sie sich an unseren Waffen und Sätteln.
